My name is Jahfree Duncan, IT Director for Match Education (www.matcheducation.org). We operate an elementary, middle, and high school in Boston for inner city students, and run an urban education tutoring program in Illinois in partnership with the Chicago Public Schools and the University of Chicago.

We’re looking for seniors who either

• want to spend a year working closely with students in Boston while training to be a teacher or 
• want to spend a year in Boston or Chicago working closely with students before heading off to grad school or another career 

 Our teacher training program was recently recognized by US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for its innovation. Program partici­pants receive training on how to become highly effective first-year teachers (there is a near 100% placement rate in high performing urban schools).

In addition, teacher residents receive housing and a living stipend while completing their Master’s. The teacher residency is only available in Boston, but we have tutoring opportunities (for folks just looking to do an urban education gap year) available in both Chicago and Boston.

Great news from recent P&G grad Kavin Williams

Kavin had a tough choice to make from among several great law schools, but finally has decided that he will attend the University of Michigan School of Law beginning in the fall.  Since graduation he's been working in the tech industry and did some time as a football coach here at Puget Sound.  Now it's on to bigger things!

Research and Communications Research Summer Intership in NYC

Public Opinion Research and Communications Summer Internship Program 2014

The Opportunity Agenda is dedicated to building the national will to expand opportunity for all in America through communications, research, and advocacy. We are seeking a spring intern with a demonstrated commitment to social justice and equal opportunity, good research skills and understanding of communications, and the initiative to take on new and innovative assignments. A sense of humor and a dose of modesty are essential. The internship is open to graduate students and professionals with a specific interest in public opinion research and media content analysis around social justice issues including poverty, criminal justice, economic opportunity, racial equality, and human rights in general. The intern will work under the supervision of the Public Opinion and Media Research Coordinator in the communications department of the organization.

The precise nature of the work varies by project and is based on the office's needs, but examples of work include:

Project management Facilitating communications with consultants and other third partiesMonitoring the public opinion research landscape for new research;Assisting in collecting and analyzing existing public opinion research;Creating visual presentations of data (charts, table, graphics);Blogging on public opinion topics;Assisting with survey development, implementation and analysis of results for feedback on workshops, presentations or events;Working with the communications team and highly acclaimed research consultants; Creating power point presentations of public opinion data; Assorted administrative duties

Qualifications: Candidates for this position should have a strong desire to work in public opinion research and public policy. The ideal candidate will have some experience working in a professional environment and therefore bring to the position analytical, organizational, and general office skills along with strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. Good statistical skills and strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and PowerPoint, are required. Experience with SPSS is preferred. The candidate must be comfortable taking initiative and should be detail-oriented, energetic and a quick learner with strong writing, editing, and research skills. Applicants with previous political or consumer opinion research experience will be given preference.

The intern will ideally commit to 40 hours a week for 10 weeks starting on June 2nd. School credit or a stipend are available.

KLAN-Destine Relationships: One Man Single-Handedly Dismantled the Klan in Maryland

For over 20 years, author, activist, and pioneer in race relations Daryl Davis has been meeting with Klan leaders and asking them face-to-face: "How can you hate me when you don't even know me?" In a one-on-one setting, Mr. Davis respectfully but firmly questions and challenges their ideas about race. Over time, countless Klansman have left the organization because they grew to respect Mr. Davis as a friend—ultimately resulting in the single-handed dismantling of the KKK in his home state of Maryland. Come join the conversation about his experiences and the techniques he has used in moving towards the eradication of racism. This event celebrates the 15th anniversary of his critically-acclaimed book, Klan-destine Relationships, which chronicles his journey in race relations. Mr. Davis will also speak about what has changed and what remains the same in the 15 years since the book's release.

The event will be held on Wednesday, April 23rd, at 7:30pm in Commencement Hall's Tahoma Room.
